Mehfil-e-Gazal #20

To continue the thread which started accidentally, here is another well known Urdu poet who is
equally well-known in Hindi film circles as song-writer/lyricist. Kaifi Azmi needs no
introduction, to followers of either genre.

mai.n Dhuu.NDhataa huu.N jise vo jahaa.N nahii.n milataa
na_ii zamii.n nayaa aasamaa.N nahii.n milataa

/**
A ghazal in the same 'zameen' by another poet/lyricist - Shahryar:

kabhii kisii ko muqammil jahaa.N nahii.n milataa
kahii.n zamii.n to kahii.n aasamaa.N nahii.n milataa
**/

na_ii zamii.n nayaa aasamaa.N bhii mil jaaye
naye bashar kaa kahii.n kuchh nishaa.N nahii.n milataa

vo teG mil ga_ii jis se huaa hai qatl meraa
kisii ke haath kaa us par nishaa.N nahii.n milataa

vo meraa gaa.Nv hai vo mere gaa.Nv ke chuulhe
ki jin me.n shole to shole dhuaa.N nahii.n milataa

jo ik Khudaa nahii.n milataa to itanaa maatam kyuu.N
yahaa.N to ko_ii meraa hamazabaa.N nahii.n milataa

/**
From the same same Shahryar ghazal, we have:

jise bhii dekhiye vo apane aap me.n gum hai
zubaa.N milii hai magar ham-zubaa.N nahii.n milataa
**/

kha.Daa huu.N kab se mai.n cheharo.n ke ek ja.ngal me.n
tumhaare chehare kaa kuchh bhii yahaa.N nahii.n milataa

The Shahryar ghazal is from the film "Ahista Ahista". The remaining ashaar are as follows:

bujhaa sakaa hai bhalaa kaun vaqt ke shole
ye aisii aag hai jis me.n dhuaa.N nahii.n milataa

tere jahaa.N me.n aisaa nahii.n ki pyaar na ho
jahaa.N ummiid ho is kii vahaa.N nahii.n milataa

It is interesting to note that the tone of the two ghazals is quite different. Perhaps this is
in part attributable to the fact that the song is written under constraints of the film plot,
whereas a poet is free to write on whichever topic takes his fancy.
