We end this week on Ghalib with a ghazal that , we hope, is a true 
representative of his style and showcases his talent as a poet par 
excellence.


dard se mere hai tujhako beqaraarii haa_e haa_e
kyaa huaa zaalim terii Gafalatashi'aarii haa_e haa_e

[Gafalatashi'aarii = attitude of carelessness]

tere dil me.n gar na thaa aashob-e-Gam kaa hausalaa
tuu ne phir kyuu.N kii thii merii Gam-gusaarii haa_e haa_e

[aashob = tumult/uproar; hausalaa = strength; Gam-gusaarii = sympathize]

kyuu.N merii Gam-Khvaaragii kaa thujhako aayaa thaa Khayaal
dushmanii apanii thii merii dostadaarii haa_e haa_e

[Gam-Khvaaragii = to share in the sorrow; dostadaarii = friendship]

umr bhar kaa tuune paimaan-e-vafaa baa.Ndhaa to kyaa
umr bhar ko bhii to nahii.n hai paayadaarii haa_e haa_e

[paimaan-e-vafaa = vow of faithfulness; paayadaarii = certainity]

zahar lagatii hai mujhe aab-o-havaa-e-zi.ndagii
yaanii tujhase thii ise naasaazagaarii haa_e haa_e

[naasaazagaarii = fault/wrong]

gulafishaani haa_e naaz-e-jalvaa ko kyaa ho gayaa
Khaak par hotii hai terii laalaakaarii haa_e haa_e

[gulafishaanii = shower of flowers; naaz-e-jalvaa = a view of beauty/the 
beautiful one]
[laalaakaarii = string of flowers]

sharm-e-rusavaa_ii se jaa chhupanaa naqaab-e-Khaak me.n
Khatm hai ulfat kii tujh par pardaadaarii haa_e haa_e

[sharm-e-rusavaa_ii = shame of getting a bad reputation]
[naqaab-e-Khaak = a veil of mud/ashes; ulfat = love; pardaadaarii = 
secrecy]

Khaak me.n naamuus-e-paimaan-e-muhabbat mil ga_ii
uTh ga_ii duniyaa se raah-o-rasm-e-yaarii haa_e haa_e

[naamuus-e-paimaan-e-muhabbat = honor/pride of vows of love]
[raah-o-rasm-e-yaarii = ways(respect for) of friendship]

haath hii teGaazamaa kaa kaam se jaataa rahaa
dil pe ik lagane naa paayaa zaKhmekaarii haa_e haa_e

[teGaazamaa = to wield a sword; zaKhmekaarii = deep wound]

kis tarah kaaTe ko_ii shab haa_e taar-e-barshigaal
hai nazar Khuu.Nkardaa-e-aKhtar_shumaarii haa_e haa_e

[shab haa_e taar-e-barshigaal = dark nights of the rainy season]
[Khuu_kardaa-e-aKhtar_shumaarii = used to counting the stars]

gosh mahajuur-e-payaam-o-chashm maharuum-e-jamaal
ek dil, tis par ye naa-ummiidavaarii haa_e haa_e

[gosh mahajuur-e-payaam-o-chashm maharuum-e-jamaal = the ears devoid of 
messages (her voice) and the eyes devoid of beuaty (her face)]
[naa-ummiidavaarii = without hope]

ishq ne paka.Daa na thaa "Ghalib" abhii vahashat kaa ra.ng
rah gayaa thaa dil me.n jo kuchh zauq-e-Khvaarii haa_e haa_e

[vahashat = fear; zauq-e-Khvaarii = a taste for being humiliated]
