Mehfil-e-Gazal #63

Today's 'nazaaraanaa' is a ghazal by Daag Dehlvi, sung by Ghulam
Ali. The ghazal is from the album "Khoobasoorat Ghazalen". I have
included some information about the album at the end of the ghazal.

ye jo hai hukm mere paas na aaye ko_ii
is liye ruuTh rahe hai.n ki manaaye ko_ii

taak me.n hai nigah-e-shauq Khudaa Khair kare
saamane se mere bachataa huaa jaaye ko_ii

haal afalaaq-o-zamii.n kaa jo bataayaa bhii to kyaa
baat vo hai jo tere dil kii baataaye ko_ii

[afalaaq = sky]

aapane 'Daag' ko muu.Nh bhii na lagaayaa afsos
us ko rakhataa thaa kaleje se lagaaye ko_ii

I have an additional sher from the same ghazal:

ho chukaa aish kaa jalasaa to mujhe Khat bhejaa
aap kii tarah se mehamaan bulaaye ko_ii

About the album:

The CD (Magnasound D3-Z1829) has 13 ghazals in it. None of
Ghulam Ali's well-known ghazals find their way in here. Instead
one finds some rare, but nonetheless delightful ghazals. One
complaint - Magnasound has very conveniently forgotten to
include any information about the poets. As a consequence,
some of the poets are not known to me. :-( However, the album
is a nice addition for someone who already has the more well-known
Ghulam Ali ghazals. Here is a list of the ghazals:

1. zehaal-e-misqeen makun taGaaful varaa-e-nainaa banaaye batiyaa.N

This ghazal is by Amir Khusro, and is in his inimitable style - a
mixture of Persian and Hindi. The first misra (line) of each sher is in
Persian and the second in Hindi. Here is one sher:

shabaan-e-hijraa.N daraaz chuu zulf roz-e-vaslat chuu umr-e-kotaa
(The night of separation is long like your long black hair,
the time for meeting brief like life)
sakhii piyaa ko jo mai.n na dekhuu.N to kaise kaaTuu a.Ndherii ratiyaa.N

This ghazal is one of my favourites. For those of you interested, a
translation of this ghazal can be foudn by searching the archives of
the newsgroup alt.language.urdu.poetry - the forum of discussion for
urdu poetry on the Net. Its an interesting place, and there is something
for everybody, even beginners.

2. Ishq az pa-e-jaan giraft maara

The second ghazal is also by Amir Khusro. I don't like this as much as
the first one.

3. Aage ba.De na qisaa-e-ishq-e-butaa.N se ham - Altaf Husain Hali
4. Haq vafaa kaa jo ham jataane lage -
5. Koii hamnafas nahin hai koii raazdaan nahin hai - Mustafa Zaidi
6. Unake ik jaN nisar ham bhii hain - (I don't know the poet but I love
the ghazal)
7. Kab koii tujhasaa aaiinaa-e-ruu yaa hai doosraa - (Another
delightfully sung ghazal)
8. is dard-e-laajavaab kii kyuu.Nkar karuuN davaa -
9. saktiyaaN kartaa hoon dil par Gair se Gaafil hoon main - Allama Iqbal
10. yaar ko ragbat-e-agiyaar na hone paaye - Maulana Shibali
11. kuchh to ho chaaraa-e-Gam kaa ilaaj - Maulana Shibali
12. ye jo hai hukm - Daag Dehlvi
13. tumhaare Khat men naayaa ik salaam kis kaa thaa - Daag Dehlvi

We would appreciate it if someone can fill in the name of the poets.
