We received a few queries regarding the alt.language.urdu.poetry
(ALUP) newsgroup, and how to access it. We thought it might be
useful to others, so we are including the information here.

Usenet is the discussion forum on the Net. To access the any of the
discussion group, you would require the services of a newsgroup (NG)
browser. Some organizations have the newsgroup browsing service
setup as part of their messaging (e-mail) system. However, the most
convenient way to access the NGs is to use a Net-based NG-browsing
service. The most well-known of these are DejaNews, Zippo, and to
some extent Reference. There are a score of others, no doubt, but
these the most well-known ones. Zippo allows free access to some of
the newsgroups but usually the 'alt' NGs are only available to those
who are registered Zipor users. In other words, you cannot access
ALUP for free through Zippo. This information is a little outdated
but I don't think anything's changed since I last checked. Reference
is a free service but I am not too fond of its user interface and it
takes forever to get the latest posts. Zippo was quite good at that.

The best NG browsing service, and the one I use myself is DejaNews.
Its free. You can create your own profile, and pre-select the
newsgroups you want to browse on a regular basis. They provide you
with an e-mail address, which you can use to post on the NGs, which
is very convenient. The best part of DejaNews is that they have a
phenomenal search engine (for NG articles), and their archive is mind
boggling.

For those with AOL accounts, NG browsing is a happy exercise. Go to
Keyword NEWSGROUPS for more information. If you are on AOL 4.0,
select the Internet drop down toolbar button, and select Newsgroups.
TA DA!!! :-)
