I have received quite a few requests asking me
the difference between ghazal, nazms, masnavi,
etc. There is a brief definition of the various types
of poem at the following URL:
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Ginza/6631/define.html

For a more in-depth and technical definition of a
Gazal, go to http://www.nagpurcity.net/ghazal/.
Click on the "What is Ghazal" link.

An excerpt from K.C.Kanda's book Masterpieces
of Urdu Ghazal, giving the history of Urdu poetry
can be found at the following web-site:

I will be happy to answer any further queries you may
have, to the best of my abilities.
