Mehfil-e-Gazal #91

Date: 17-Dec-98
Poet: Ameer Minai and Mirza Ghalib

I am sure you are wondering about two poets
named in today's posts. The reason is simple. This
is a ploy used often by Jagjit and Chitra Singh,
specially in their concerts. They sing 'ham-radeef'
Gazals, alternating singing the sher from each
Gazal.

Thus in the Gazal presented here, Jagjit starts off with the
Ameer Minai Gazal. The next sher "meharbaa.N hoke bulaa
lo..", sung by Chitra Singh is by Ghalib. Another Jagjit-Chitra
Gazal that has been sung in this way is "ishq me.n Gairat-e-
jazbaat ne rone naa diyaa".

us kii hasarat hai jise dil se miTaa bhii na sakuu.N
Dhuu.NDhane us ko chalaa huu.N jise paa bhii na sakuu.N

meharbaa.N hoke bulaa lo mujhe chaaho jis vaqt
mai.v gayaa vaqt nahii.n huu.N ke phir aa bhii na sakuu.N

Daal kar Khaak mere Khuu.N pe qaatil ne kahaa
kuchh ye me.nha.ndii nahii.n merii ke chhupaa bhii na sakuu.N

zauf me.n taa naye aGiyaar kaa shikvaa kyaa hai
baat kuchh sar to nahii.n hai ke uThaa bhii na sakuu.N

zabt kambaKht ne aur aake galaa gho.NTaa hai
ke use haal sunaauu.N to sunaa bhii na sakuu.N

zahar milataa hii nahii.n mujhako sitamagar varanaa
kyaa qasam hai tere milane kii ke khaa bhii na sakuu.N

us ke pahaluu me.n jo le jaake sulaa duu.N dil ko
nii.nd aisii use aaye ke jagaa bhii na sakuu.N

-------------------------------------------------
The 'radeef' of a Gazal is the word/phrase which
is repeated at the end of the second misra (line)
of each sher. For example, in the above Gazal,
the radeef is "bhii na sakuu.N"

The words which rhyme with each other in the
second misra of each sher is called 'qafiyaa'.
