Mehfil-e-Gazal #102

Home | January '99 Index

Date: 05-Jan-99
Poet: Sagar Nizami

One of the things I forgot to mention in the last
post was that both the Sagar Nizami Gazals were
composed by Master Madan himself. These are also
the first two Gazals in CD-1.

Each CD in the set tries to maintain a "mood". In
brief:

CD-1 features the style of KLS and Begum Akhtar.
Master Madan, C.H.Atma, Habib Wali Mohammed and
Mukesh are showcased as representative of Saigal's
style while the great Malika herself makes herself
heard. However, of all the singers mentioned as
followers of her style, we get to hear only Chhaya
Ganguli!!! No Farida Khanum, no Iqbal Bano, no
Abida Parveen!

CD-2 features non-filmi Gazals by legendary playback
singers - Talat, Rafi, Mukesh, Lata, Asha, and a few
others.

CD-3 features the style of Mehdi Hasan and Ghulam
Ali. Mehdi Hasan is sorely missed! But still a good
collection.

CD-4 is Jagjit Singh and the generation of Gazal
singers who came after him. Bhupinder, Pankaj Udhas,
Vinod Sehgal, Ghanshyam Vaswani and Hariharan are
the other singers featured here. Chitra Singh
and Mitalee also make an appearance.

CD-5 features Gazal Mehfils, Gazal duets and some
Gazals from Hindi films.

So, here is the second Sagar Nizami Gazal:

yuu.N na rah rah kar hame.n tarasaa_iiye
aa_iiye, aa jaa_iye, aa jaa_iye

phir vahii daanistaa Thokar khaa_iye
phir merii aagosh me.n gir jaa_iye

[daanistaa = deliberate; aagosh = embrace]

merii duniyaa mu.ntazir hai aap kii
apanii duniyaa chho.D kar aa jaa_iye

[mu.ntazir = waiting]

ye havaa "Sagar" ye halki chaa.NDanii
jii me.n aataa hai yahii.n mar jaa_iye

Note: The second last sher seems to violate the
qafiya-radeef tradition of the Gazal. To rhyme, it
should be "kar jaa_iye" not "kar aa jaa_iye". I
wonder if anyone has an explanation for this.
