umr jalvo.n me.n basar ho ye zaruurii to nahii.n 
har shab-e-Gam kii sahar ho ye zaruurii to nahii.n 

[jalvaa = splendour/display; basar = to live]
[shab-e-Gam = night of sorrow; sahar = morning]

chashm-e-saaqii se piyo yaa lab-e-saaGar se piyo 
beKhudii aaTho.n pahar ho ye zaruurii to nahii.n 

[chashm = eye; saaGar = goblet/cup]
[beKhudii = intoxication; aaTho.n pahar = 24 hours]

nii.nd to dard ke bistar pe bhii aa sakatii hai 
unakii aaGosh me.n sar ho ye zaruurii to nahii.n 

[aaGosh = embrace/bosom]

sheKh karataa to hai masjid me.n Khudaa ko sajde 
usake sajdo.n me.n asar ho ye zaruurii to nahii.n 

[sajdaa = bow in prayer, touching the forehead to the ground]
[asar = effect/influence]

sab kii nazaro.n me.n ho saaqii ye zaruurii hai magar 
sab pe saaqii kii nazar ho ye zaruurii to nahii.n 

[saaqii = one who disperses wine]

** Note that in the last sher the poet has used saaqii as a 
metaphor for God **
