Poet: Ali Sardar Jafri/Majrooh Sultanpuri

Recently the world of Urdu poetry lost two of its most popular and
respected figures. Ali Sardar Jafri and Majrooh Sultanpuri were both
connected to the Progressive writers movement. However, while Majrooh
Sultanpuri's name is strongly tied to that of Indian films, Ali
Sardar Jafri's connection is not that well known. He did write the
lyrics for some songs. However, for the film Footpath, all the songs
were jointly penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Ali Sardar Jafri. As a
joint tribute to both poets, here is a song from the film, sung by
Talat Mahmood and composed by Khaiyyam.

shaam-e-Gam kii qasam
aaj Gam-gii.n hai.n ham
aa bhii jaa aa bhii jaa aaj mere sanam
dil pareshaan hai, raat viiraan hai
dekh jaa kis tarah, aaj tanahaa hai.n ham
shaam-e-Gam kii qasam...

[Gam-gii.n = grief-stricken]

chain kaisaa jo pahaluu me.n tuu hii nahii.n
maar Daale na dard-e-judaa_ii kahii.n
rut hasii.n hai.n to kyaa, chaa.Ndanii hai to kyaa
chaa.Ndanii zulm hai aur judaa_ii sitam
shaam-e-Gam kii qasam...

ab to aajaa ke ab raat bhii so ga_ii
zindagii Gam ke seharaa_o.n me.n kho ga_ii
Dhuu.NDhatii hai nazar, tuu kahaa.N hai.n magar
dekhate dekhate aayaa aa.Nkho.n me.n nam
shaam-e-Gam kii qasam...
