Date: 19-Jun-2001
Poet: Ejaz Aslam

I recently attended a mushaira in Houston, TX
and had the good fortune of listening to some
of the great Urdu poets of our times. I would
like to say a few words about the mushaira before
we move on to today's ghazal.

The poets who were invited for the mushaira
included Munir Niazi, Wasim Barelvi, Amjad
Islam Amjad, Himayat Ali Shayar, Dr. Pirzada
Qasim, Anwar Masood and Zakia Ghazal. The
responsbility of the 'nizaamat' of the mushaira
was given to Pervaiz Jafri who is an old hand
at this and conducted the mushaira admirably.
Incidentally, Pervaiz Jafri is Ali Sardar Jafri's
nephew. His wife is Ishrat Afreen, a poetess in
her own right.

As is customary, the mushaira started with new
poets reciting their 'kalaam'. One such poet was
Ejaz Aslam. The ghazal he recited is presented
here.

Some of the other newer names from the Houston
area who recited their ghazals and nazms were
Armaan Rashid, Abdul Qadeer Khan, Khursheed Umr
and Afzal Firdaus. In the coming days, I shall
present some ghazals recited by these poets before
we move on to the heavy-weights :-)
